It’s called the REI Thingamajig and is a used gear swap where people can bring their outdoor gear and sell to others attending the event. Think a flea market for outdoor gear. They’ll have tables set up for people to sell person to person. There will also be a stage featuring live bluegrass and folk music in coordination with the Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival, German and local craft beer, and multiple food trucks. A portion of the proceeds from entry fee goes to benefit Living Classrooms environmental education programs on Kingman Island. The event landing page is www.wundergartendc.com/thingamajig. There are more details on the event there. I’ve also attached a digital poster.
It’s a really cool opportunity for the outdoor community, and we’re hoping that y’all would be able to get the word out on Meet-Up, the forum, google group, social media, etc. Let me know if this is possible-- Thanks!
A little more context:
Where is it?
The REI Community Space at Wunder Garten – 150 M St NE in Washington DC. In the NoMa neighborhood, immediately adjacent to the south entrance of the NoMa Gallaudet Metro station and very close to the future site for our DC Flagship store. Wunder Garten is a pop-up beer garden, and REI has installed a space within the beer garden where we teach classes and hold events for the outdoor community. We’ve been running programs there to great success since the beginning of June.
Is it like a Used Gear Sale/Garage Sale/Attic Sale?
Not quite. REI will not be selling anything onsite or processing any sales. We’re simply providing a platform for the outdoor community to sell their used stuff to one another. We’ll have folding tables set up for people.
When is it?
October 17th, from 12pm-5pm.
What can people sell?
Bikes, skis, boats, tents, packs, stoves, flashlights, technical outdoor clothing, etc. Should be in decent condition and working order.
What can people not sell?
Guns, knives, or anything that could be considered a weapon. Life-protecting technical climbing equipment (ropes, hardware, protection, helmets). REI reserves the right to review and ask that an item be removed from the swap.
