New Climber Day 2014!

JUST IN TIME FOR ROCKTOBER!


What:

On Sunday, September 28, 2014, from 9:00am - 1:00pm the Mountaineering Section of the PATC will be holding it’s annual New Climber Day event at Carderock. This will be a great opportunity to come out and see what outdoor climbing is all about!  The event is open to all.  PATC-MS members will be there to help you get fitted in a harness, a pair of climbing shoes and will belay you up the rock.


We'll be in need of several items: If you have the following and would like to share (even if you can't be there), please let your voice be heard!

- Ropes, top rope anchors, etc.
- ****Children's harnesses and climbing shoes*****
- HELMETS
- Curious/adventurous children or spouses or girlfriends or boyfriends.
- Anything else to make this day fun! Be creative!

Volunteers Needed:

We also need about 8-10 volunteers to help set-up top-ropes and belay.  Please let Andy (rocclim78@gmail.com) know that you would like to help and plan to arrive by 8:00am to help set-up, and indicate if you can volunteer in this google doc:

Belayers must be members of the PATC-MS with liability waivers on file.

Skills required:
For volunteers: Ability to belay, willingness to assist with tie-ins, adjusting harnesses, adjusting helmets, and providing encouragement to climbers. Ability to build a Top Rope system desired if providing a rope, and, of course, enthusiasm.

For participants: Enthusiasm and signing a liability waiver.


Equipment required:
For volunteers: Harness and belay device. Top rope setup if providing such.

For participants: All necessary gear (harness, shoes, helmets) will be provided, recommend bringing sneakers just in case. If bringing kids and you have a kid’s bicycle helmet, bring that too.


Carpool location (if applicable):
N/A: Carpools to be worked out between individual volunteers and participants, through the listserv, meetup, or other forum


Directions to Event:
When following the searching directions on the internet, keep in mind that 'Carderock' will find the community of Carderock, MD, but the climbing area entrance is directly across from Naval Research Lab Complex on the Clara Barton Parkway (of course this military installation isn't displayed on the map); you cannot miss this GIANT complex. Coming off the beltway on the Clara Barton Parkway, heading west, away from the beltway, take your first exit once you are on the Clara Barton. At that stop sign you'll be on an overpass, take a left to Carderock-Right to the front gate of the military complex. Go over the overpass and swing right, the road then turns left then having gone under the "Carderock" overpass you will arrive at a Stop sign affectionately called the "T". Make a right turn at the T-intersection and drive to the very last parking area.

Follow the trail past the restroom structure to the message board at the top of the crag...this was the approach; 1/7th of a mile if that. You can walk around to the right to get to the base of the crag or straight past the message board and over and down there is a craggy gully to carefully downclimb (very easy). This crag is compact and continuous. Once you approach the message board you'll see the tangle of climbing anchors setup. You have arrived!!!! Enjoy!

For this event, PATC-MS will be set up in the parking lot to register participants.


Description of climbs:
Slick, schisty slab, but excellent for beginner face climbing. Climbs will range anywhere from 5.3 (easy) to 5.7-8 (moderate), depending on the number of routes and ropes available.


Cancellation Policy:
If you can no longer make the event, please change your registration as soon as possible. This allows people on the wait list to join. If you fail to show for an event and do not cancel within 48hours, you will be considered a no show. Club members who have 3 or more no shows will not be able to register for future events for a period of one year whether its due to failure to cancel or the person does not show up for the event at all.


Reminder:
Climbing is a dangerous sport and serious injury may occur.
