The Gendarme’s annual Chili Cook-off competition kicks off at Seneca Rocks, WV on Saturday, October 19th.  This fun annual event serves as the last big event to closeout another an amazing rock climbing season. To make the most of the weekend, the PATC-MS reserved a group site at Seneca Shadows Campground for Friday night, Oct 18th until Sunday, Oct 20th. The campground entrance is located about a mile south of the village of Seneca Rocks, WV and is on the right side. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as only a few cars can park there. Otherwise, we get fined.

Important info up front:

Camp site: The group campsite offers 5 tent pads that hold up to 40 people. Be courteous and share a tent or allow others to easily add their tent to the tent pad. Do you want to join in the fun but not stay with us? Alternate places to stay are Princess Snowbird Campground, Yokums Motel, Seneca House (a hostel in Onego just a few miles up Rt. 33) and other cabins and motels.

Chili Cook off Info: Make at least 1 gallon or more of your favorite chili recipe and submit entry by 5:30pm. Judging will be at 6:00pm, $5.00 entry fee.  Only one category which is best overall. Judging will be by an impartial (and hopefully sober) panel. Bowls for judging will be provided when entry fee is paid. Rest is up to you. Gendarme does not have facilities for heating chili up. Kegs will be tapped when the time comes but normally around 5:30pm.

PATS-MS’s own Andy Weinmann will present the slideshow on is doing the slide show this year and it’s called “Highland and Islands: A Climbing Journey through Scotland”.

***Please bring your own bowl, cup and spoon***

Climbing Info:

-Seneca Rocks Climb description and Directions: http://potomacmountainclub.org/seneca_rocks

***Seneca is primarily a multi-pitch traditional climbing area.  There are limited areas to top-rope, mostly at the Lower Slabs area.  It is strongly recommend that participants, especially those that will only be following, have a partner(s) lined up prior to the weekend.  This should not discourage someone from going who can only follow, just have a partner lined up that is a lead climber or knows how to set top ropes and head to the Lower Slabs.  This event is different from a Carderock Wednesday where we can randomly meet up and climb together.***

What you need to do:

-Driving: Campground site is limited to 10 cars. Please indicate if you need a ride or can offer a ride. Be mindful of the number of cars in the campsite parking lot and park in overflow if it's crowded so we don't get fined (again!) Please post if you have a full car so we can count the cars coming.

Cancellation Policy: If you can no longer make the event, please change your registration as soon as possible. This allows people on the wait list to join. If you fail to show for an event and do not cancel within 48hours, you will be considered a no show. Club members who have 3 or more no shows will not be able to register for future events for a period of one year whether its due to failure to cancel or the person does not show up for the event at all.

PATC-MS Member Only policy: This event is for members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club-Mountaineering Section only, in good standing with liability waivers on file, unless otherwise stated. To join the club and enjoy its events and trainings, click here:

This will be strictly enforced by event leaders. Any person who shows up to an event that is not a member will not be able to participate in the event.

Reminder: Climbing is a dangerous sport and serious injury may occur.
