 This year PATC-MS will be offering an introductory program to members looking to advance their ice climbing skills beyond following and begin leading on ice!


Prior ice climbing experience is required for New Ice Leader Weekend.  Each participant will be responsible to organize, coordinate, buy or borrow ice tools (not mountaineering axes), boots and crampons.


Location:  White Mountains vicinity North Conway, NH (location may change due ice conditions).


Dates: 150800 FEB 2014 – 171200(ish) FEB 2014

Detailed Itinerary:

 

SAT, 15 FEB

0800:  Meet & Greet at the Front Grind in North Conway

0800-0930:  Coffee, breakfast, and **participants get any necessary rental gear from IME (just a few doors down from the Front Grind)

0930-1000:  Travel to climbing area

1000-UTC:  New Ice Leaders' Clinic

                        -  Review & practice moving on ice

-  Review & practice placing ice protection

-  Review & practice placing ice protection while moving on ice

-  Review & practice building belay anchors

-  Climb & build belay anchors while on mock lead

                                               

SUN, 16 FEB

0800:  Meet & Greet at the Front Grind in North Conway

0800-0930:  Coffee, breakfast, and review day-1 topics/ answer questions

0930-1000:  Travel to climbing area

1000-UTC:  New Ice Leaders' Clinic

                        -  Single pitch lead climbing

                        -  Multi-pitch lead climbing

 

MON, 17 FEB
0800-1130:  More ice climbing

 

PREREQs:

Club Member in good standing w waiver on file

Some previous ice climbing experience (have followed and rappelled on ice)

 

Participants a responsible for all travel, lodging, and personal equipment. 

(I'll try to work out a deal w IME for rentals once we know how many)

How to apply: Login to the PMC website, find the New Ice Leader Weekend under events, fill out the registration form and done. It’s that easy!

Max number of participants: 9

How to get there:

·         It’s about a 12 hour drive from DC area. Recommend carpooling.

·         Flights are available to Manchester, NH from all 3 DC area airports.

Clothing and Gear:

Key to staying warm is layers. Please NO COTTON.

Pack clothing as if you were going mountaineering on Mt. Washington. Minus the cooking and camping gear. Gloves a guaranteed to get wet, please bring multiple gloves.

Bring all necessary gear required to ice climb. To include: helmet, harness, belay devise with two lockers, (2) ice tools, crampon compatible boots and crampons and (3) ice screws (16-19mm in length).

Group Equipment Needed:  3 TR Rigs and 3 Lead Ropes

Food:

Bring plenty of water and snack to include lunch for the days we will be ice climbing. A thermos full of coffee or hot chocolate will be very beneficial.

Lodging:

Plenty of options are available in and around North Conway.
