    • Carderock Recreation Area, Billy Goat Trail C Trailhead

Open to all PATC-MS members. Break up your week with some outdoor climbing!

What: Members meet every Wednesday for some loosely organized top-roping at Carderock Recreation Area.

No outdoor climbing experience is necessary, but you should be proficient in belaying.

When: Wednesdays starting at 4:30 PM, but show up any time after. Climbing ends at sunset, when the park closes.

Bring: Please bring your own climbing shoes, harness, and belay device, and helmet -- the club will not provide these. The club may or may not provide a few ropes, so bring your top rope setup if you have one!

Also, you may want insect repellent and sunscreen as it gets warmer.

If you are new to PATC-MS, or outdoor climbing, please be aware that not everyone there is a member. Ask before climbing on a rope that is not yours!

Meet at: the far north parking lot of the Carderock Recreation Area (google maps link below), aka the Billy Goat Trail C north parking lot trailhead:

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Billy+Goat+Trail+C+-+North+Parking+Lot,+Carderock,+Potomac,+MD+20854/@38.9759961,-77.2061336,17.32z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x89b63530048f24db:0xcf1b1dc094b5831c!8m2!3d38.9761307!4d-77.2055297?hl=en

From there, take the wooden ramp toward the river (the side with the permanent buildings) about 100 yards to the cliff, just past the bulletin board. Either scramble down here, or follow the trail right for a gentle walk-down. Find us at the base of the cliff! There is only the one area, so members should be easy to find.

PATC-MS Member Only policy: This event is for members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club-Mountaineering Section only, in good standing with liability waivers on file, unless otherwise stated

    Reminder:
Climbing is a dangerous sport and serious injury may occur.  By participating in this trip you assume all risk of responsibility for your own safety.

This monthly event is open to all climbers, regardless of PATC-MS membership status.  No outdoor climbing experience is necessary, but you should be proficient in belaying.

What: The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club Mountaineering Section (PATC-MS) will host social top rope climbing and training for outdoor skills every first Wednesday of every month at Carderock from April through October.  We are calling this event Carderock First Wednesdays.

Bring: Please bring your own climbing shoes, harness, and belay device- the club will not provide these.  The club will provide a few ropes, but bring your top rope setup if you have one!

If you are new to PATC-MS, look for our Carderock Stewards when you arrive (and sign a waiver!).  Starting around 5pm, they will be at the crag in red club t-shirts and can help introduce you to the club and climbing at Carderock.

Mini-Clinic: Starting at 6pm, Marty will also run some basic skills training for those looking to transition outdoors. The clinic this month is "Intro to Top-Rope Anchors".

Clinics will meet at the bulletin board located at the trail end near the top of the cliff.

We look forward to seeing you at Carderock First Wednesdays!

Meet: at the far north parking lot of the Carderock Recreation Area (google maps link below), aka the Billy Goat Trail C north parking lot trail head:

Come to the annual Cinco De Mayo party at Seneca Rocks. PATC-MS has reserved Group Site D at Seneca Shadows campground. Climb all day Saturday, party at the Gendarme on Saturday night.

This event is for members and registered guests of members.

We recommend putting yourself on the Google Spreadsheet, particularly if you are looking for a ride or a leader. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OmddudoH8iCG4pPuywl7xOJpD7ZYSuHNOqCvTIhY7zM/edit?usp=sharing  We recommend arranging rope teams in advance. Seneca is a multi-pitch area with limited opportunities for top roping.

A few reminders. This is a crowded weekend at Seneca. The parking at the Group Site will fill up. Don't leave your car at the site when it's full, pull around to the overflow area (by the walk-in sites). The Group Site itself might fill up. If you know you are arriving late you might want to know about other options, like walk-ins or Princess Snowbird.

Plans for the party at The Gendarme have not been announced, but most likely there will be food, a show, a raffle, and a band at SRMG.

    OPEN TO THE CLIMBING COMMUNITY
(PATC-MS Membership encouraged, but not required)

Have you been part of trail work crew at a crag event and wanted to learn or do more of this type of work?  Want to know what goes into planning and designing trail improvements and what tools can help you do the job?  Do you want to learn how to use rigging gear for moving big stone blocks and logs for use in trail work?  Would you like to figure out how to build trails people want to be on instead of creating their own social-trail? All of these questions and more will be answered when we hold a Trail Work Leader Training Weekend at Seneca Rocks, WV.  This is an effort by PATC-MS and Friends of Seneca, with strong support from Mid-Atlantic Climbers, the AAC and the US Forest Service.

This two-day training is designed to help grow the base of volunteers in the climbing community that have the skills to lead a trail work crew.  This will NOT be a standard trail work weekend.  The topics we plan to cover include:

    -Safety Considerations

-Scoping and Designing a Project - what needs to be done & how best can we do it in the allotted time?

-Hand Tools - the primary tools of the trade.  Their uses,  limitations and other considerations

-Mechanical Advantage Tools - work smarter, not harder

    -Trail Erosion and Drainage

    -Cribbing and Crib Walls

-Steps - Stone and Wood Options

We will meet at the Gendarme at 830am on Saturday morning.  From there we will proceed to the Discovery Center where we will have access to the classroom for the first part of our course.  Fieldwork will take place at the Lower Slabs.

Please be sure to wear good sturdy boots and bring a helmet, gloves a small pack and food/water for the day both days.  Pens/pencils and a notepad will also be helpful for taking notes.  Be prepared to learn, ask questions, and work hard.

We can handle a maximum of 10 participants at this time.  We will have a Waitlist and may consider opening a few more slots if our resources allow.

Camping: PATC-MS has reserved Group Site E at Seneca Shadows for 19-21 May for this event.  Please make sure that you tear down your site on Sunday morning before you head out for the day as we need to be out of the site by 1pm and we will not be finished with the course until at least 2pm.

Questions?  Please contact Andy Weinmann (rocclim78 at gmail.com) or Edwin Bachetti (edwin at bachetti.net).

    New Climber Day 2017

    What:

On Saturday, May 20, from 9:00am - 2:00pm the Mountaineering Section of the PATC will be holding its annual New Climber Day event at Carderock. This will be a great opportunity to come out and see what outdoor climbing is all about!  The event is open to all.  PATC-MS members will be there to help you get fitted in a harness, a pair of climbing shoes and will belay you up the rock.

We'll be in need of several items: If you have the following and would like to share (even if you can't be there), please let your voice be heard!

    • Ropes, top rope anchors, etc.
    • **Children's harnesses and climbing shoes**
    • HELMETS
    • Small Canopy Tent and tables for registration
    • Curious/adventurous children or spouses or girlfriends or boyfriends
    • Anything else to make this day fun! Be creative!

If you have any of the above or would like to help organize, please contact me at wkessing@gmail.com.

    Volunteers Needed:

We also need about 8-10 volunteers to help set-up top-ropes and belay.  Please let Bill (wkessing@gmail.com) know that you would like to help and plan to arrive by 8:00am to help set-up, and indicate if you can volunteer in this google doc:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PnvCyx36ojeXgCLPA5oi5XfhYQqX6KBgqVciSz2br3w/edit#gid=0

All belayers must be members of the PATC-MS with liability waivers on file.

Looking forward to this being another GREAT Mountaineering Section event! See you all out there! :) Spread the word!

    Skills required:
For volunteers: Ability to belay, willingness to assist with tie-ins, adjusting harnesses, adjusting helmets, and providing encouragement to climbers. Ability to build a Top Rope system desired if providing a rope, and, of course, enthusiasm.

For participants: Enthusiasm and signing a liability waiver.

    Equipment required:
For volunteers: Harness and belay device. Top rope setup if providing such.

For participants: All necessary gear (harness, shoes, helmets) will be provided. We recommend bringing sneakers just in case. If bringing kids and you have a kid’s bicycle helmet, bring that too.

    Carpool location (if applicable):
PATC-MS is not organizing a carpool. Rides should be worked out between individual volunteers and participants, through the listserv or other forums.

    Directions to Event:

Top parking lot of Carderock Recreation Area (38.976050, -77.205239) [Google Map Link]

Please note: When searching for directions on your phone, 'Carderock' will incorrectly lead you to the community of Carderock, MD.

The climbing area entrance is directly across from Naval Research Lab Complex on the Clara Barton Parkway (of course this military installation isn't displayed on the map); you cannot miss this GIANT complex.

    • Coming off the Beltway on the Clara Barton Parkway exit, heading west, take the first exit (right off-ramp) once you are on Clara Barton.
    • At that stop sign you'll be on an overpass, take a left to Carderock (you'll see the front gate of the military complex on the right).
    • Go over the overpass and follow the road as it swerves right, then left and the "Carderock" overpass.
    • You will arrive at a Stop sign affectionately called the "T". Make a right turn at the T-intersection and drive to the very last parking area.
    • Follow the trail past the restroom structure to the message board at the top of the crag. This was the approach; 1/7th of a mile if that.
    • You can follow the dirt trail right to get to the base of the crag or straight past the message board and over and down there is a craggy gully to carefully downclimb (very easy).
    • This crag is compact and continuous. Once you approach the message board you'll see the tangle of climbing anchors setup. You have arrived!!!! Enjoy!

For this event, PATC-MS will be set up in the parking lot to register participants. If you arrive late, find us at the crag instead.

    Description of climbs:
Slick, schisty slab, but excellent for beginner face climbing. Climbs will range anywhere from 5.3 (easy) to 5.7-8 (moderate), depending on the number of routes and ropes available.

    Cancellation Policy:
If you can no longer make the event, please change your registration as soon as possible. This allows people on the wait list to join. If you fail to show for an event and do not cancel within 48 hours, you will be considered a no show. Club members who have 3 or more no shows will not be able to register for future events for a period of one year whether its due to failure to cancel or the person does not show up for the event at all.

    Reminder:
Climbing is a dangerous sport and serious injury may occur.

Registration will open at 10 AM on Friday, April 29!

This one is for all the ladies out there!

Join us for a weekend of girl time at the crag! Come to PATC-MS's women's only weekend trip to the Gunks, the Yosemite of the East!

    What:
A chance to meet other female climbers and hop on to some fun multi-pitch trad climbs... the Gunks has a wonderful array of fantastic climbs at all climbing levels.

The club will help coordinate transportation and pay for camping for Saturday and check out Monday morning at the AAC Campground!

This is not a guided event.  We will try out best to pair up followers with leaders, but do not expect it. There are a few places to top-rope as well, but it is primarily a multi-pitch trad climbing area. The Shawangunks still has other great things to offer like hiking and a lot of fantastic bouldering! Hopefully we have enough leaders who will be joining and can take up one or two followers.  Leaders will have priority during sign-up.

There will be an outdoors bouldering clinic Sunday morning... the Carriage Road is littered with awesome bouldering at all levels and is the perfect place for this clinic.

We will be having a Saturday night dinner meetup at the campgrounds pavilion. Bring your own dinner (either cook, or take a short drive into town and pick up something from on of the many restaurants), drinks, and whatnot.

    Camping:

The club has reserved 4 campsites. Each campsite can hold 2 two-person small tents and 1 one-person with max 4 people per campsite. Please share tents.

The AAC campground has a covered pavilion suitable for stove cooking, fire ring, drinking water, and coin operated shower. Scattered around the campgrounds are bathrooms, running water, and a few faucets for water. Campsites have picnic tables suitable for stove cooking, but no open fires are allowed, except at the fire ring near the pavilion. If you need supplies there is a climbing shop (https://www.rockandsnow.com/store/) and a ShopRite in town.

    Where:
The Shawangunks (aka the Gunks), New Paltz, NY.  It's about a 6 hour drive from the DC area.

Please note that the Gunks is a FEE AREA managed by the Mohonk Preserve. The fee is $17/day or purchase an annual membership for $95 (which works out to 6 days of climbing to pay for it). Discounts for households.

    When:
    Friday, May 26 - Monday, May 29

Please note your camping plans in the spreadsheet that you will get a link to when you register.

    Type of climbing:

Loads of trad climbing, including a nearly inexhaustible amount of great easy to moderate climbs. Most of the routes are one to three pitch with well maintained bolts or anchors nearby as obvious descent points. Rock is very solid, characterized by horizontal cracks, easy roofs even on moderate climbs.

The main cliffs are the Trapps. The traditional grey Dick WIlliams guidebook is sold at the climbing store nearby, although the Gunks App (iPhone and Android) is also gaining popularity, and includes a GPS feature for finding routes.

    Notes:

The cliffs, especially at the top, feature full bars of LTE reception for most people, but the campsite and town do not. Load your map directions ahead of time.

    PATC-MS Member Only policy:

This event is for members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club-Mountaineering Section only, in good standing with liability waivers on file, unless otherwise stated.

This will be strictly enforced by event leaders. Any person who shows up to an event that is not a member will not be able to participate in the event.

    Cancellation Policy:

Three days of fun and climbing in the Yosemite of the East!  Come to PATC-MS's climbing gathering at the Gunks for Memorial Day weekend!

    WHAT:

Memorial weekend camping and climbing at the Gunks, one of the best places anywhere for beautiful, moderate traditional climbing. Plenty of options for all ability levels (there is also some bouldering and top-roping, but this is primarily a trad area).

The club will help coordinate transportation and help out with any info people need on the area, climbing, or otherwise.

    Camping:

The club has reserved 5 campsites. Each campsite can hold 2 two-person small tents and 1 one-person with max 4 people per campsite. Please share tents.

The entire Memorial weekend from Friday, May 26 to Monday, May 29.

    Additional info:

    • Please find your own climbing partner for the weekend.  The listserv is a great place to post that you are looking for a partner if you don't have one lined up.
    • There are many restaurants and hotels in the city of New Paltz, approximately 20 minutes from the AAC Campgrounds by car.
