Are you looking to take your climbing experience to the next level and learn to follow multi-pitch trad climbing?  If so, then this is the weekend for you.  New Follower Weekend (NFW) takes place at Seneca Rocks, WV and consists of experienced trad climbing club members taking up one or two followers who are new to trad climbing.  Participants should have some experience top-roping and know how to tie-in, belay and be familiar with basic commands. Ideally, participants have belayed a leader, have top-roped outdoors, and have rappelled. Preference will be given to participants who have solid top-rope skills and are ready to proceed to following multi-pitch climbs. You can gain these skills by climbing at our Carderock Wednesdays or linking up with Club members on the weekend at the local crags (check out the Listserve to see who is climbing where!).

This year's event is being organized by Club members Andy Weinmann and Lindsay Rohrbaugh as part of their fundraiser efforts to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.  We ask that participants contribute at least a $25 donation on their website here:

Their website gives more information about their efforts, myeloma, and the foundation (which is in the top 1% of all charities and has over 90% of its budget directly supporting research).  There is a schedule of events that they are holding through the spring and summer, most of which are climbing related. You can also find more info and stay up to date with their announcements on their Facebook page, Craggin' 4 Cures:

At NFW you will learn about the steps involved in a multi-pitch climb and how to safely descend at the end of the day.  This is a great way to be introduced to the realm of the multi-pitch trad climb.  After this weekend we strongly encourage you to link-up with a professional guide service (such as Seneca Rock Climbing School or Seneca Rocks Mountain Guides) or take part in one of the other Craggin' 4 Cures climbing weekends to further get your trad climbing career started out right.

Participants can expect to learn about the following:

-Choosing the route and route planning

-Lead belaying (on the ground and on ledges/stances)

-Anchoring into and understanding a multi-directional anchor

-Rope management

-Rock protection (passive, active, fixed)

-Protection removal

-Efficiently transitioning from following to belaying

We ask that you please only register for this event if you have outdoor top-rope experience, have limited experience in multi-pitch trad following, and have not previously participated in this event (sport climbers welcome, even if you climb hard sport!).  Again, you should have experience top-roping.  Once you register you will be directed to complete a survey of your skills. Registering does not automatically guarantee a space in this event. Based on registrants experience we may select participants with experience that allows us to maximize the group experience and best utilize available leaders. This will help us place you with the right leader and will give your leader an idea of your skills.  Finally, we strongly encourage you to meet with your leader and climb together at least once on top rope before the Seneca weekend.

Participants will be responsible for the following items:

-Appropriate clothing for the weather

-Rain jacket

-Food and water for the day

-Harness, shoes, helmet, chalkbag

-Belay device and locking carabiner

-2 prussiks with locking carabiners

-Nut tool (can rent from club if needed)

We will have a group campsite reserved for the weekend at Seneca Shadows and we will coordinate carpooling as we get closer.  We can also do a pot-luck on Saturday night if there's enough interest...please let us know if you are interested in this!

Please contact (Andy) or (Lindsay).
