Climbing in the Dolomites

November 20, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Craig Miller will talk about Dolomite classic climbing…the routes, their location, the gear needed, the best seasons to climb and similar. He will also cover cultural aspects…food, wine, how to get here, where to stay, the history…

“The talk/presentation could be called “an introduction to climbing in the Dolomites”. The focus is on trad classic climbs from the 1920s to the 1940s i.e. Comici, Dibona, Glück, and Demetz. Climbing areas I will talk about are Sella, Pordoi, Lagazuoi, Sassolungo. Of course the Vajolet towers… A little on Tre Cime (Spigolo Giallo)

Specific climbing requirements for the Dolomites: gear, shoes, clothes, training. My top 10 climbs (between 5.6 to 5.10d.) “

Craig grew up in DC, went to Gonzaga High School and started climbing at 15 at Carderock.  He learned to lead at Seneca, and climbed all over the world – France, Austria, Nepal, Pakistan, Japan, Canada, Spain. University in Colorado was skiing, climbing, too much time at Eldorado, Lumpy Ridge and RMNP in the 80s/90s. He taught high school in Boulder and worked for the USG for 26 years.  He is now a consultant to the USG in Africa.

Craig reacquainted himself with the Dolomites in 2016 while living in Austria, and kept going back and wasting money on hotels. So he moved semi-permanently to Alta Badia in 2020.
