Avalanche Level 1: Avalanche basics for skiers and mountaineers

The Avalanche Level 1 course is the standard training course for recreational athletes in avalanche terrain. Avy 1 gives you basic knowledge and techniques for traveling in avalanche terrain. The talk will cover the basic phenomenology of avalanches (loose versus slabs versus cornices), the importance of slope angle, rescue methods, and planning routes in hazardous terrain. In addition to summarizing the basic ideas, I will demonstrate planning some real trips under different forecasted avalanche conditions.
