Old Rag climbing and backcountry camping weekend

October 28 @ 8:00 am - October 29 @ 5:00 pm

**This event is not for novice climbers. You should be either a trad climber or own and know how to set your own top rope anchors with confidence. Reservations through the park service are now required for Old Rag. You are responsible for obtaining your own reservation.**

From MP: Old Rag is the traditional climbing crown of Virginia. For those willing to brave the somewhat lengthy approach with a full rack and rope, gorgeous single pitch, Joshua Tree-esque granite awaits you. Classic splitters, corners and faces on very old and bomber rock define this area. Choose wisely, because an injury here requiring a rescue is quite an involved and arduous procedure.

If you are top roping, please bring a top rope set up, harness, belay device, helmet, etc. We will be camping overnight along the Weakley Hollow fire road, near the main parking lot. Bring food, water, and your backcountry camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.). You will be able to get more water and food from your cars if needed for Sunday. The hike in involves a decent ~2.5 mile, 1400-foot approach. We will be climbing at the Lower Ridge Slabs on Saturday, 10/28, and the Reflector Oven on Sunday, 10/29. The Reflector Oven is home to arguably the best route in the state of Virginia–Strawberry Fields. We will return to camp after climbing on Saturday evening and enjoy dinner and beverages to refuel for Sunday’s climbing and the hike out.

We will meet at the Centreville VA Park & Ridge at 6:30am on Saturday to carpool. There is an entrance fee of $30 per person to get into the park, unless you have a qualifying pass (e.g., Annual “America the Beautiful” Pass). You can make your Day-Use reservation to park here for both Saturday and Sunday. This trip is application only and will be capped at 8 climbers. You can fill out the application here.

Please note that this is not a guided event and none of our trip leaders are professional guides. You will be climbing on ropes set up by members of the club who are hobby climbers and not professionals. Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport and you do so at your own risk. You are responsible for yourself and your own safety at all times.
