Old Rag top roping and trad trip
November 6, 2021 @ 3:30 am - 1:00 pm
FreeFrom MP:
Old Rag is the traditional climbing crown of Virginia. For those willing to brave the somewhat lengthy approach with a full rack and rope, gorgeous single pitch, Joshua Tree-esque granite awaits you. Classic splitters, corners and faces on very old and bomber rock define this area. There are a few routes that go for two pitches, but not many. The same can be said for bolted routes – they are sparse and most require the augmentation of traditional gear.
The climbing at Old Rag offers plenty of opportunity for adventure. Choose wisely, because an injury here requiring a rescue is quite an involved and arduous procedure. Be cautious.
Directions
Sperryville to Old Rag Parking: From Route 211, turn onto Route 522 and follow it south for 0.8 mile. Turn right on Route 231, follow 8 miles, turn right onto Route 601 and follow signs to the Old Rag parking area, approximately 3 miles.
Madison to Old Rag Parking: From Route 29 Business, turn onto Route 231 and follow it for 12.8 miles. Turn left onto Route 602. Follow signs for the parking area, approximately 3 miles.
We will meet at the Old Rag parking lot at 7:30am. There will be a 6am carpool from Oakton. If you are top roping, you do not need to bring a partner. If you are trad climbing, you will need to find a partner ahead of time. If you just need a follower, try posting on the listserv. There is an entrance fee to get into the park.
If you are top roping, please bring a top rope set up, harness, belay device, helmet, etc. Bring food and water for the day. The hike in is arduous.
Disclaimer – Rock climbing is an inherently dangerous activity and you do so at your own risk.
