Old Rag Trad/Top Roping
July 9 @ 6:00 am - 5:00 pm$0.00
**This event is not for novice climbers. You should be either a trad climber or own and know how to set your own top rope anchors with confidence. Reservations through the park service are now required for Old Rag. You are responsible for obtaining your own reservation!**
From MP: Old Rag is the traditional climbing crown of Virginia. For those willing to brave the somewhat lengthy approach with a full rack and rope, gorgeous single pitch, Joshua Tree-esque granite awaits you. Classic splitters, corners and faces on very old and bomber rock define this area. There are a few routes that go for two pitches, but not many. The same can be said for bolted routes – they are sparse and most require the augmentation of traditional gear. The climbing at Old Rag offers plenty of opportunity for adventure. Choose wisely, because an injury here requiring a rescue is quite an involved and arduous procedure. If you are top roping, please bring a top rope set up, harness, belay device, helmet, etc. Bring food and water for the day. The hike in is arduous – it involves a decent ~2.5 mile, 1400-foot approach and some scrambling. We will be climbing at the shaded PATC/Skyline wall.
We will meet at the Oakton Starbucks at 6:00am. If you are top roping, you do not need to bring a partner. If you are trad climbing, you will need to find a partner ahead of time. If you just need a follower, try posting on the google group or whatsapp group. There is an entrance fee of $30 per person to get into the park. You can make your reservation here.
Please note that this is not a guided event and none of our trip leaders are professional guides. You will be climbing on ropes set up by members of the club who are hobby climbers and not professionals. Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport and you do so at your own risk. You are responsible for yourself and your own safety at all times.
