Join PATC-MS for a day of climbing at Annapolis Rock. Annapolis Rock is a quartzite crag in South Mountain State Park. It is known for its horizontal fractures which make for a variety of easy, moderate, and difficult face and roof routes.

This event will be limited to PATC-MS members and capped at 14 climbers.

There is a two mile hike in to Annapolis Rock. Plan to bring water (at least a gallon) and snacks for the day.

Climbers should bring their own personal gear (harness, helmet, shoes, chalk bag, and belay device) and a top-rope set-up if they have one. I will set up some top ropes for people but will primarily be trad climbing down at the South End. You do not need to bring a partner for this event unless you are trad climbing.

The club will meet at 8 a.m. the Appalachian Trailhead Parking on Route 40, just outside of Myersville, Maryland. Please do not be late as the group will not wait for you.

Join us for another PATC-MS event for those who identify as female, non-binary, or trans. We will be trad climbing/top roping at Sugarloaf Mountain from 9am-1pm. There will be a social at Sugarloaf Winery after the climbing. The group will meet under the pavilion by the porta potties a the West View Parking Lot at 9am - please do not be late as the crag is a ways back from the parking lot and you will not be able to find it on your own.

All levels are welcome! This is a member's only event.

Join PATC-MS on Saturday, November 6, 2021 for a day of climbing at Safe Harbor in southeast, Pennsylvania.

Safe Harbor is a sunny sport crag that is perfect for cool-to-cold weather climbing. It is 1.5 to 2 hours drive.

The trip is limited to PATC-MS members and is capped at 10 climbers. There is a short hike to the climbs so dress appropriately and bring plenty of food and water for the day.

Climbers should also bring their own personal gear (harness, helmet, shoes, chalk bag, and belay device), 8-10 quick draws, and a 60-70m rope.

Please note the carpool location is the I-95 commuter lot (linked below).  Meet time is 07:30 to carpool up to Safe Harbor PA.  We should wrap up around 4-5pm.

    From MP:

Old Rag is the traditional climbing crown of Virginia. For those willing to brave the somewhat lengthy approach with a full rack and rope, gorgeous single pitch, Joshua Tree-esque granite awaits you. Classic splitters, corners and faces on very old and bomber rock define this area. There are a few routes that go for two pitches, but not many. The same can be said for bolted routes - they are sparse and most require the augmentation of traditional gear.

The climbing at Old Rag offers plenty of opportunity for adventure. Choose wisely, because an injury here requiring a rescue is quite an involved and arduous procedure. Be cautious.

    Directions

Sperryville to Old Rag Parking: From Route 211, turn onto Route 522 and follow it south for 0.8 mile. Turn right on Route 231, follow 8 miles, turn right onto Route 601 and follow signs to the Old Rag parking area, approximately 3 miles.
Madison to Old Rag Parking: From Route 29 Business, turn onto Route 231 and follow it for 12.8 miles. Turn left onto Route 602. Follow signs for the parking area, approximately 3 miles.

We will meet at the Old Rag parking lot at 7:30am. There will be a 6am carpool from Oakton. If you are top roping, you do not need to bring a partner. If you are trad climbing, you will need to find a partner ahead of time. If you just need a follower, try posting on the listserv. There is an entrance fee to get into the park.

If you are top roping, please bring a top rope set up, harness, belay device, helmet, etc. Bring food and water for the day. The hike in is arduous.

On Sunday, November 7, we'll gather at the pavilion at Carderock Picnic Pavilion to talk all things mountaineering. We'll plan to start the meetup at 2pm and give folks an opportunity to get some top roping in if they like. Also, that's the first Sunday of daylight savings, so it'll be dark by 5pm (so bring your headlamps for the alpine start later that evening).

We'll eat, drink and get to know the community of climbers that want to take up (or continue to pursue) this incredibly relaxing, poolside, umbrella-in-your-drink sport. More to follow on the program, but we'll trade stories, experiences, and find out where folks are in their mountaineering journey - and how we/the club can support each other in our climbing pursuits.

    So, details:

Each winter PATC-MS offers an Alpine Skills Weekend (ASW) to share our members’ mountaineering experience from around the world. No prior experience is required. Participants must obtain (rent, borrow, buy) mountaineering equipment and winter clothing for potential extreme weather conditions.

The primary purpose of ASW is to learn basic mountaineering skills. If weather allows we will make a summit attempt on Mt. Washington. We expect all participants to be in shape and prepared for the elements when they arrive in New Hampshire.

Climbing, and especially mountaineering, is a dangerous sport. Mt. Washington has recorded many of the worst winds and coldest temperatures - anywhere. Do not underestimate what -20°F feels like, especially for multiple days.

Registering is just an application; everyone who signs up will be notified within a week whether they have been selected for ASW. Preference will be given to those who have been members of PATC-MS longer.

Detailed information will be distributed to all participants about the required gear and other logistics for the course.

Dates: January 13-17, 2022 (MLK Weekend)

    Location: North Conway, New Hampshire

    Participants: 10

    Mentors: 3-4

Lodging: Tent camping outside of Harvard Cabin

Participants are required to attend the following pre-ASW activities:

    • October 27 at 7pm – Zoom meeting
    • November 20 – Training hike
    • December 12 – Gear check

Consider the dates for ASW and the pre-ASW activities carefully. This is one of the club's most popular events. There will be a waiting list. If you drop out, it may affect the other participants.

    COVID Protocols

    • All participants and mentors must be vaccinated.
    • Why? Everyone will be sharing sleeping tents and cook tents, therefore spending large amounts of time in enclosed spaces in close proximity.

    Primary Skills Covered

    • Ascending a snow slope in boots
    • Use of crampons
    • Use of mountaineering ice axe
    • Self-arrest
    • Moving in rope teams
    • Anchors (deadman anchors, use of tools, snow pickets, and ice screws)
    • Descending: walk-off using plunge step
    • Descending: rappelling (v-thread, bollards, etc) – time permitting
    • Use of avalanche gear (optional) – time permitting
    • Intro to ice climbing (optional) – time and weather permitting

    Experience and Equipment

No prior experience is required for ASW. Participants must obtain (rent, borrow, buy) general mountaineering equipment and winter clothing for possible extreme severe weather conditions. Some equipment (axes, boots, crampons) is available to borrow from the PATC-MS Gear Locker. Rental gear is available in North Conway at International Mountain Equipment (IME), Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), and REI.

    Lodging/Camping

All participants and mentors will camp outside of Harvard Cabin, and will be required to share a tent (unless you bring your own 4-season tent). The camping cost is $10/night per person. Last resort is to stay at Joe Dodge Lodge and hike up each morning (approximately a two hour hike).

    ASW Start Time

Participants must arrive at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center no later than 11am on Thursday, January 13. It is strongly recommended that participants arrive in North Conway Wednesday evening (motel stay) to allow plenty of time on Thursday to take care of last minute things.

    Fitness Level

Mountaineering requires a high degree of physical stamina and mental toughness. Even for the healthiest and fittest individuals, climbing mountains qualifies as an extremely challenging endeavor. Plan to be in excellent shape. The mentors can recommend hikes and other training activities.

    Cost

There is no cost to sign up for ASW. However, all personal trip expenses are the responsibility of the participants. These expenses include travel to/from New Hampshire, lodging, food, and gear (detailed gear list will be provided). Gear may be the largest expense depending on what you already have.
