    Directions to Event:

Top parking lot of Carderock Recreation Area (38.976050, -77.205239) [Google Map Link]

Please note: When searching for directions on your phone, 'Carderock' will incorrectly lead you to the community of Carderock, MD.

The climbing area entrance is directly across from Naval Research Lab Complex on the Clara Barton Parkway (of course this military installation isn't displayed on the map); you cannot miss this GIANT complex.

    • Coming off the Beltway on the Clara Barton Parkway exit, heading west, take the first exit (right off-ramp) once you are on Clara Barton.
    • At that stop sign you'll be on an overpass, take a left to Carderock (you'll see the front gate of the military complex on the right).
    • Go over the overpass and follow the road as it swerves right, then left and the "Carderock" overpass.
    • You will arrive at a Stop sign affectionately called the "T". Make a right turn at the T-intersection and drive to the very last parking area.
    • Follow the trail past the restroom structure to the message board at the top of the crag. This was the approach; 1/7th of a mile if that.
    • You can follow the dirt trail right to get to the base of the crag or straight past the message board and over and down there is a craggy gully to carefully downclimb (very easy).
    • This crag is compact and continuous. Once you approach the message board you'll see the tangle of climbing anchors setup. You have arrived!!!! Enjoy!

For this event, PATC-MS will be set up in the parking lot to register participants. If you arrive late, find us at the crag instead.

    Description of climbs:
Slick, schisty slab, but excellent for beginner face climbing. Climbs will range anywhere from 5.3 (easy) to 5.7-8 (moderate), depending on the number of routes and ropes available.

    Cancellation Policy:
If you can no longer make the event, please change your registration as soon as possible. This allows people on the wait list to join. If you fail to show for an event and do not cancel within 48 hours, you will be considered a no show. Club members who have 3 or more no shows will not be able to register for future events for a period of one year whether its due to failure to cancel or the person does not show up for the event at all.

Join us for an extended weekend in the White Mountains of New Hampshire climbing, hiking, and exploring this beautiful region.

Long-time Club members Andy Weinmann and Lindsay Rohrbaugh are opening their place (Das Kletterhaus) in Campton, New Hampshire for a Club outing.

WHEN: Members can stay anytime during 9-15 SEP period. We chose these dates to avoid the very busy Labor Day weekend.

WHAT: An extended weekend in the White Mountains, based in the Franconia Notch region. Climbing options abound in this area for all ability levels.

Camping at Das Kletterhaus will be in the area out in front of the house. Folks will have access to the house to use the kitchen and bathroom and to generally hang out and gather; there is also an outhouse around the back that can be used at any time and should be used for "after-hours" business.

Be respectful and clean up after yourselves. Please bring your own food, utensils, towels, and toiletries. There is no fee required, but Andy and Lindsay do appreciate any contributions - either cash or some of your time helping out around the place...inquire with them.

Please fill out the carpool/camping signup spreadsheet.

Climbing and other activities: The two well-known areas are Rumney (sport climbing on schist ~15-20 min away) and long trad climbs on Cannon Mtn (~30 min). Other quality crags close by include:

    • Echo Crag - "Carderock approach" to granite cracks
    • The Eaglet - free standing spire across from Cannon
    • Kinsman Notch - variety of trad, sport, and mixed climbing on granite
    • Welch-Dickey - mostly granite slab
    • Bryant Ledge - near the road, easy/mod trad on granite
    • The famous Cathedral Ledge, near North Conway, is about 1-1/2 hrs drive over the Kancamagus Highway.
    • There are too many other crags around the region to list.

In addition to roped climbing, there is a large amount of bouldering in the region at places like Waterville Valley and Kinsman Notch.

Enjoy two days of top-rope climbing and bouldering on super grippy sandstone while taking in beautiful West Virginia views along the Cheat River. This trip is being planned in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Explorers Club, so it is also an opportunity to meet new climbers.

Due to the nature of the trip and the climbing there’s no need to come with a belay partner. This trip is a great option for members interested in making the leap from gym to climbing outside.

The club will help coordinate carpooling and any gear needs. Space is limited to 10 people so don't delay in registering.

PATC-MS is organizing an extended weekend climbing trip to Linville Gorge in northwestern North Carolina on September 24-26, 2021.

Linville Gorge (aka, the Grand Canyon of the east coast) offers a multitude of climbs. The two must popular areas for trad are Table rock and the Amphitheatre. Table Rock is a great place for new trad leaders to hone their skills.

This is not an instructional clinic/event.  Please arrange for a partner prior to the weekend - do not expect that others will take you in their party if you just show up.

Camping:  Camping is available near the parking lot of Table Rock but this is a remote camping area. There are pit toilets available but no running water and you have to bring everything else yourself. The closest store is a 25 minute drive. The camping area is first come/first serve. The remoteness of Linville Gorge adds to the adventure so don't let that deter you. There are camping areas and hotels at the bottom of the mountain.

The Club will have an area to act as a base camp, but you can camp wherever you choose.  There are beautiful campsites with great views if you are willing to walk on the trail a bit.

Transportation, etc:  It’s approximately 7 hours from the Washington, DC area. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation, climbing partner(s), camping/climbing gear, and food (other than the club dinner).  Parking will be limited at the campsite, so please plan to carpool.
