Active Applications open for Spring M-Con Jan 17-27

It’s time to get your mountain fitness on! Applications for the Spring Mountaineering Conditioning Group (M-Con) are now being accepted! The application and additional information can be found at www.mountaineeringconditioning.com. Applicants must register to access the application. Applications will be accepted from January 17 to January 27 and applicants will be notified of their status by February 5. The program runs from February 22 to June 1. Specific dates are listed on the site. Participants must attend a minimum of 2/3rd of all events (hikes, classes and talks). Applications will be blinded and objectively reviewed by the mentors.
What is M-Con, you ask? M-Con is a physical fitness and skills training program for anyone interested in mountaineering or related sports. The program teaches a heart rate-based training methodology using the core principles of endurance training – consistency, progression, and periodization. The format will include 2 in-person meetings at the PATC Clubhouse in Vienna and 7 hikes in Shenandoah National Park and George Washington National Forest. The program will also include a series of lectures on common training traps, psychological preparedness, and other training topics. Participants will attend ground school to learn basic mountaineering skills, such as knots, gear selection, weather assessment, and risk analysis. Last year’s M-Con Advanced program will not be offered, although James Stockton will be leading a technical program focused on haul systems and crevasse rescue that is separate from but compliments M-Con. Applicants can apply to both programs.
But that sounds intimidating, you say? You can do this! We’ve all struggled with doubts about our abilities. M-Con aims to lower the barriers to mountaineering and create a supportive and fun learning experience (plus we have trail charcuterie boards!) Prior mountaineering experience is not necessary. While the primary focus is on mountaineering, the program can also increase fitness for alpine climbing (who loves a long approach?!), ski/snowboard mountaineering, sky running, etc. Any club member in good standing is welcome to apply, although it is most appropriate for individuals with some basic fitness and beginner to intermediate skills. Participation is limited to 16 due to the group size limits in the national parks and forests.
Chris Close, Ana Mills, Chris Scherphorn, and Kathleen Krupenevich will be leading this year’s M-Con. Please contact Ana Mills with any questions at [email protected].
See you on the trail!
