Expired Carderock – First Wednesday – Members Only

This First Wednesday is an informal club meetup for members only. Will also be holding our May meeting at this event. The meeting will be from approx. 7:00-7:30 at the Pavilion. There is no RSVP for this event. Please set up a top rope if you are able. Bring your climbing shoes, harness, and helmet for an evening of climbing at Carderock. Please wear your red PATC shirt if you have it, or any red shirt.

If the weather looks bad, we will make the call to cancel the event at 2pm the day of. Check the Whatsapp group if the weather is questionable.

Please note that this is not a guided event and none of our trip leaders are professional guides. You will be climbing on ropes set up by members of the club who are hobby climbers and not professionals. Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport and you do so at your own risk. You are responsible for yourself and your own safety at all times.

Description:

Carderock Recreation Area is on the Potomac River just outside the 495 Beltway. Carderock is part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and is well known for top rope climbing and hiking.  The Potomac Mountain Club has published a guidebook to Carderock.

The climbing area is less than a hundred yards from the parking lot. To access the climbing at Carderock, park in the north parking lot (Pin) and follow the trail westward past the toilet. It leads to the top of the cliffs. At the end, stay slightly left of straight to take the easy scramble to the bottom. You can also go right and follow the longer trail until it turns left. It continues along the base of the cliffs for a couple hundred yards.

Note that cars have been broken into in this parking lot, so do not leave valuables in your car.

PMC Social Events are often held at the Carderock Pavilion.  There are two Pavilion parking lots, one to the left and one to the right upon entering Carderock.
