Expired Old Rag Trad-n-Camp Weekend

Please note this trip is by application only – details are given below.  This replaces the online registration process.

Come join us for a weekend of climbing and camping at the premier location for granite crack climbing in the DMV. Old Rag is home to some of the classic climbs in our area. We will set up camp on the mountain and then climb at the Lower Ridge Slabs and in Lieu of Seneca crags. Afterwards, we will return to camp for dinner and drinks, and possibly a camp fire if the National Parks Service allows. On Sunday, we will turn our attention to the Reflector Oven, which has some of the more notable climbs in the state of Virginia. We will wrap up by breaking down camp and having celebratory dinner and drinks nearby. The camping will be backcountry-style, which means we will hike up our camp gear and then hike it back down to the cars Sunday evening.

Old Rag is remote for rescue workers and all trip participants should be aware of that in climbing there. Experience with trad climbing and crack climbing is essential to make the most of this trip. Self-reliance is key.

Application for the trip is here.

Description:

Old Rag is a granite mountain in the Shenandoah National Park offering good hiking and challenging trad climbing on a number of mostly one pitch cliffs. Although there are many bolted and mixed routes on Old Rag, they are not sport climbs. There is a recently published (November 2023) climbing guide available from Sharp End Publishing.

Old Rag is located several hours drive south west of Washington DC near Sperryville VA.  There are two main points of access,   with parking at the NPS Ranger Station on the north side of Old Rag and at Berry Hollow on the southwest side.

Visiting Old Rag requires a limited availability day pass – purchased in advance – from March 1 – November 30.  This is in addition to paying the entry fee or possessing one of several NPS park passes.  Details re obtaining the day pass are here.
