Upcoming Gunks Trip Sept 25 – Sept 28

This is a three day trip to the Schwangunks, a trad climbing area about 80 miles north of New York City. The idea is to arrive Thursday evening (~5 1/2 hours driving time), pitch tents at the AAC campground, climb full days on Friday and Saturday; Sunday break up camp, climb 1/2 day, drive back.

Dinner together in New Paltz or the Brauhaus is planned for Friday night….~7 ish. Sat night dinner at Camp or TBD.

You need to have some trad climbing experience to go on this trip.  Please fill out the screening questions here

Participant selection will be done externally based on your answers so you do not need to explicitly sign up for this event.

A WhatsApp group will be set up closer to the date to coordinate rides, partners etc as necessary.

Trip leader is moreira.ernestof at gmail.com

AAC Samuel F Pryor III Campsite Booking

The AAC Gunks campground is booked through the AAC website here.

Reservations are substantially cheaper as an AAC member – remember to login in.  Refunds up to one week before the booking are 50%, after that no refund.  Each camping platform can take 2 or 3 small tents.

Campsite is often fully booked so don’t leave it too late to make a reservation.

Cancellations

Please cancel your registration if you are no longer able to attend  so that someone else can have your spot.  To do this, contact the trip organizer and the webmaster.

If you do not contact the trip organizer or webmaster, this counts as a no-show. If you no show once, you will get an email from the Chair. If you do not show up twice, you will not be allowed to sign up for another event for 3 months. If you continue to not show up, your membership will be cancelled and refunded.

Please note that this is not a guided event and none of our trip organizers are professional guides. You will be climbing with members of the club who are hobby climbers and not professionals. Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport and you do so at your own risk. You are responsible for yourself and your own safety at all times.

New Paltz, New York, 12561, United States

Description:

The Gunks (short for Shawangunks) is one of the premier trad climbing areas in the country. Located near New Paltz, NY, the Gunks is about 85 miles from the NYC metropolitan area. It is part of the Mohonk Preserve, a 501c(3) charitable organization.

To climb at the Gunks you need a day pass or an annual pass.  The  nearby town of New Paltz has a climbing store, Rock and Snow,  and there is camping at the AAC  Samuel E Pryor III campground.

The rock is quartz conglomerate with horizontal rather than vertical cracks. Climbing at the Gunks is characterized by roofs, jugs, traverses, big air, and sometimes “sporty” pro. The Gunks is famous for great one-to-three-pitch climbs of all levels of difficulty. You’ll find some of the best easy and moderate trad climbs in the country at the Gunks. There are a few bolted climbs at the Gunks, but no sport climbs.
