Avoid the crowds at the Gunks!
Join a group of work-free old-timers and other PATC members for weekday trad climbing in the Mohonk Preserve near New Paltz, New York.
The Gunks has some of the best trad climbing on the East Coast, and has many high quality routes in the 5.2 to 5.5 range for those interested in a moderate climbing experience…that said, there are climbs in this range that many climbers will find suitably challenging.
There is also top-roping at the nearby Peterskill area in Minnewaska State Park.
The plan is to travel up on Sunday, stay at the AAC Sam Pryor Campground, climb Monday to Wednesday, and return home late Wednesday or Thursday morning. The daily entrance fee at the preserve for climbers is $20, or you can purchase an annual pass for $115 with discounts for active military.
This trip is only for experienced trad climbers unless you are climbing with someone who takes responsibility for mentoring you. Participants will book their own campsites – or other lodging if you prefer – but no booking should be made until we are sure the weather will be ok. Participants will be expected to find their own partners but the trip leader Mitch Hyman will assist in matching people if necessary.
Registration will open April 14 and will be limited to 12 people.
Coordinator: Mitch Hyman, 202-320-3893.

Description:
The Gunks (short for Shawangunks) is one of the premier trad climbing areas in the country. Located near New Paltz, NY, the Gunks is about 85 miles from the NYC metropolitan area. It is part of the Mohonk Preserve, a 501c(3) charitable organization.
To climb at the Gunks you need a day pass or an annual pass. The nearby town of New Paltz has a climbing store, Rock and Snow, and there is camping at the AAC Samuel E Pryor III campground.
The rock is quartz conglomerate with horizontal rather than vertical cracks. Climbing at the Gunks is characterized by roofs, jugs, traverses, big air, and sometimes “sporty” pro. The Gunks is famous for great one-to-three-pitch climbs of all levels of difficulty. You’ll find some of the best easy and moderate trad climbs in the country at the Gunks. There are a few bolted climbs at the Gunks, but no sport climbs.
